Most couples start thinking about their honeymoon seriously about three months before the wedding. For some destinations, that is enough time. For others. Particularly the Maldives, Amalfi Coast, and peak-season Bali. It is not. This is a realistic timeline based on what we see from the couples who come to us.

Six months before: destination and budget

The first decision is the destination, and it is easier to make once you have agreed on a budget range. The Maldives and Amalfi Coast require more lead time because the best overwater bungalows and smaller hotels fill early. Bali and Taiwan are more flexible. At six months out, we recommend a 30-minute consultation to talk through options. Not to book, just to understand what is realistic for your dates and budget.

Four to five months before: confirm the booking

Once you have chosen a destination and a package, confirm the booking with a deposit. For Maldives packages, the deposit secures the specific room category. Overwater bungalows are limited and the difference between a lagoon-facing room and a standard room is significant. For Europe honeymoons, this is also the point to start the Schengen visa process if required.

Three months before: visa and insurance

If your destination requires a visa, the application window is usually open by this point. We prepare the document set and review it before submission. Travel insurance should also be confirmed at this stage. Not because anything is likely to go wrong, but because some policies require purchase within a certain number of days of the initial booking to cover pre-existing conditions and cancellation.

Six weeks before: pre-departure details

This is when we send the full pre-departure pack: confirmed flight itinerary, hotel vouchers, local contact details, emergency numbers, and any destination-specific notes. For honeymoon clients, we also confirm the room decoration and welcome amenity with the hotel at this point. Some hotels require this confirmation in writing 30 days before arrival.

What most couples leave too late

The two things we see left too late most often are the Maldives room category and the Schengen visa. Overwater bungalows at the properties we use on North Male Atoll are limited to 20 or 30 rooms, and the best-positioned ones go first. The Schengen visa is not difficult, but it requires documents that take time to gather, and the consulate processing time is fixed. Starting either of these at two months out is manageable but stressful. Starting at four months is comfortable.
